Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
